Acerinox plans workforce reduction at Spanish unit

Spanish-headquartered stainless steel producer Acerinox is proposing a reduction in workforce numbers to the employees’ council at its Cadiz unit, according to trade union information monitored by Kallanish.

Acerinox proposed a Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE) to the workers committee of the Los Barrios plant in Cadiz on 13 April. This follows a fall in orders due to the crisis caused by Covid-19.

According to the workers’ legal representation, the company has not commented up for the moment how many jobs will be affected by the planned adjustments. Acerinox is evaluating the market demand deceleration so that both parties can debate workforce cuts proposals. This should happen in the coming days, the trade union say.

Acerinox halted production on 31 March for a two-day period before the steel sector was considered an essential activity in Spain and was then exempted from production restrictions.
