Mechel’s trading arm, Mechel-Service, posted a 6% on-year increase in shipments in the first quarter to 371,000 tonnes, the company says.
Sales of hardware products grew by 86%, structural shapes by 33%, beams by 6%, and reinforcement and wire by 10% and 8%, respectively.
“In the first quarter, we retained our share in the market for rolled metal for construction purposes, despite the decline in metal consumption in the country,” says Mechel-Service sales director Stanislav Karpov. “We continue to develop sales of high-margin products and this year we plan to increase sales of rope and hardware, and continue to develop sales of rail products and the structural steel mill.”
Mechel-Service posted a 4% on-year increase in shipments in 2020 to 1.52 million tonnes despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic (see Kallanish passim). The company continued to supply large infrastructure projects in Moscow, housing construction, construction of bridges and sports facilities.
Mechel saw 2020 consolidated revenue fall 8% on-year to RUB 265.5 billion ($3.6 billion), on the back of a significant decrease in coal prices and the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
