Demand is being sustained and prices are increasing for cold rolled and hot-dipped galvanised coil in Italy, Kallanish notes. After a period of relative quiet, the market has been livelier in March, particularly for HDG, with strong sales volumes and pricing.
In Italy, lower production of these coils continues to be reported. The main steelmaker, Acciaierie d’Italia, is said to have long lead times and small allocations. Other producers are quoting end-May delivery. Tata Steel Nederland is meanwhile experiencing severe disruptions at its IJmuiden steelworks and import offers from Asia are limited, thereby extending lead times at European producers.
In Italy, HDG and CRC producers are now asking for €980-990/tonne ($1,052-1,063) base delivered, in line with ArcelorMittal’s new quotes. Contract prices are increasing to €950-960/t base delivered. Producers intend to consolidate this level and push up to €980-990/t delivered. Sources report lower stocks compared to the fourth quarter of 2022.
The current coil shortage is seen continuing in Q2 due to the production difficulties of Acciaierie d’Italia, Tata Steel disruption, no import offers from Turkey and uncompetitive Asian quotes.
