Danieli Corus to carry out repair work at Tata Steel UK’s Port Talbot steelworks

Tata Steel UK has chosen Netherlands-based engineering firm Danieli Corus to carry out repair works at its Port Talbot steelworks in South Wales, Danieli said late Aug. 24.

The repair work includes the hot blast system stove 11 at blast furnace no. 4 and stove 13 at blast furnace no. 5, which heat blast air.

If these stoves underperform, they consume more gas or require higher quantities of coke in the furnace, increasing costs.

“The hot blast stoves at both blast furnaces at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot works have achieved very long campaign lives with the support of multiple life-extension repairs, the most recent of which was the repair of stove 10 of blast furnace No. 4,” Danieli said.

Tata Steel UK has a designed steelmaking capacity of 5 million mt/year, and it produces around 3.5 million mt/year.

Platts assessed the weekly UK hot-rolled coil price at GBP800/mt DDP West Midlands June 24, down 3.6% from the start of 2022.

Platts is part of S&P Global Commodity Insights.
