Trimet Aluminium in the future will run its Gelsenkirchen production plant with hydrogen-rich energy gas from ArcelorMittal’s coke oven plant in Bottrop.
According to Trimet, the coke oven gas produced during coke production contains more than 60% hydrogen and therefore releases significantly less CO2 emissions than fossil natural gas. It says it can use the current infrastructure for transport. The coke oven gas will be sent through existing gas pipelines from Bottrop, around 15 kilometres away, to the Gelsenkirchen city port, Kallanish understands. Only the last 700 metres will require the installation of a new pipeline.
The sale involves Uniper Energy Sales, and is part of Trimet’s basic conversion program, under which it is expanding its recycling plant for climate-neutral production in the long term, it says.
