North Macedonian steel producer Makstil is revamping the reheating furnace at its plate mill in Skopje to enhance energy efficiency and reduce pollution, Kallanish learns from engineering company Danieli.
The project aims to reduce natural gas consumption by up to 10% and decrease the CO2 footprint. The upgrade, scheduled for completion by mid-2025, will also improve product quality and simplify maintenance.
The furnace, supplied by Danieli Centro Combustion and operational since 2008, has an hourly productivity of 100 tonnes of custom-made plates.
The steel shop has a capacity of 550,000 tonnes/year and consists of an electric arc furnace (EAF) for producing liquid steel, a ladle furnace for secondary refining, and three continuous casters that transform liquid steel into slabs with a thickness of 150-300mm, a width of 900-1,550mm, and lengths of 4,800mm and 12,000mm, with a maximum weight of 30 tonnes.
The mill primarily uses scrap as raw material.
The plate mill has an annual installed capacity of 350,000t of HR plates, with a thickness of 5-100mm, a width of 1,000-3,050mm, and a length of 3,500-18,500mm.
The company is owned in its majority by Duferco International Trading Holding (DITH).
