New Salzgitter power line construction to start soon

Construction work on the Salzgitter industrial power line energy transition project will begin this quarter, Kallanish hears from power grid operators Tennet and Avacon.

From 2026, the line will bring large quantities of green electricity to the city of Salzgitter, making a decisive contribution to Salzgitter AG’s production processes in a climate-friendly and future-proof manner, Tennet states. “The timely completion of the Salzgitter industrial line is crucial for the success of our transformation towards almost climate-neutral steel production,” says Salzgitter AG chief executive Gunnar Groebler.

“In addition to the rapid expansion of renewable energies, the consistent parallel expansion of the transmission and distribution grids is crucial for the successful transformation to a climate-neutral future,” adds Avacon AG ceo Marten Bunnemann. With its 110 kV line, Avacon is strengthening the Salzgitter grid node, thus enabling the provision of power for the Salzgitter region.

Besides steelmaker Salzgitter AG, another big industry player is Volkswagen AG unit PowerCo SE, which is building a large battery cell plant in the region. “As a manufacturer of battery cells, we are part of the transformation of the automotive industry. To ensure that this transformation towards sustainable mobility is successful, we are planning to use renewable energy sources to produce our battery cells,” says its chief operating officer Sebastian Wolf.
