The Spanish automotive sector increased both production and exports in March, Kallanish notes.
“Despite the improvement observed in the first quarter of this year, we must be cautious when speaking of a full recovery,” says the national automotive association Asociación Nacional de Fabricantes de Automóviles y Camiones (Anfac). “March figures are below pre-pandemic 2019 levels, while the industry still remains exposed to the microchip crisis, among other external factors,” Anfac explains.
Output in March was 237,318 units, an increase of 30.8% versus the same month in 2022. Three-month production amounted to 658,282 vehicles, up 19.6% on January-March last year.
Meanwhile, higher demand in major markets boosted Spanish vehicle exports. These were 214,460 units in March, up 39.8% compared to a year earlier.
European markets took a 90.9% share in Spanish deliveries in the month, a 1.6 percentage point growth on-year. Three-month exports rose 25.1% over Q1 2022 to 594,383 vehicles, Anfac data show.
Spain’s domestic car sales were 99,524 units in March, which is 66.1% more on-year. During the first quarter, these amounted to 237,563 vehicles, representing a growth of 44.5% y-o-y. The best-selling car was the Seat Arona with 7,504 units, followed by Dacia Sendero and Toyota C-HR respectively with 6,595 and 6,459 vehicles.
