The Spanish steel sector saw production and scrap melting increase on-month in January, Kallanish notes. Both activities, however, remained weaker compared to the same period last year.
According to Spanish steelmakers association Unesid, the local steel industry produced around 794,000 tonnes of crude steel in January. This was 20.3% more than December’s output of 660,000t but down by 20.6% year-on-year.
Spain used 666,000t of ferrous scrap for steelmaking in the first month this year, up 25.6% or 136,000t on-month. This volume, however, was down 7.2% over January 2022, Unesid data show.
