Swedish steelmaker SSAB will start supplying a zero-emission steel product based on recycled materil to cargo handling machinery producer Cargotec for use in its products this year, the two companies said May 3.
SSAB now produces two types of zero-emission steel: SSAB Zero, based on recycled steel, and SSAB Fossil-free, based on iron ore without fossil fuels. SSAB Zero has scope 1 and 2 emissions of less than 0.05 kg CO2e per kg steel, including purchased energy and transportation, according to SSAB.
Cargotec is planning to gradually start using SSAB zero steel in its products this year, expanding the partnership between the two companies. Last year tHiab, part of Cargotec, produced a prototype of the world’s first load-handling equipment made with SSAB’s fossil-free steel.
“As a provider of cargo and load handling equipment and solutions we are a major user of steel,” said Päivi Koivisto, vice president for sustainability at Cargotec. “Whenever possible, we give preference to materials with a smaller carbon footprint than traditional alternatives,” he added.
Neither company uses carbon offsetting, the statement added.
Thomas Hornfeldt, Head of Sustainable Business at SSAB, said: “Demand for zero-emission steel keeps increasing, and SSAB Zero enables us to deliver more steel of this kind to our customers already this year.”.
The company did not give any figures for expected deliveries or production capacity.
Platts, part of S&P Global Insights, launched a Northwest European hot-rolled coil carbon-accounted steel assessment May 2. The price was assessed at Eur920/mt ($1,010.34/mt) ex-works Ruhr on its first day.
The carbon-accounted steel assessment consists of Platts’ daily carbon-accounted steel premium, assessed at Eur100/mt May 2, and Platts’ daily hot-rolled coil price assessment in Northwest Europe, which was Eur820/mt ex-works Ruhr on May 2.
