TURKEY DATA: September HDG exports down 45% on year

Turkey’s coated steel coil exports, mostly hot-dip galvanized coil, fell 45% year on year in September to 139,500 mt, according to Turkish Statistical Institute data, hit by antidumping duties imposed by the European Commission and low demand in most export markets.

The EC Aug. 12 announced antidumping duties on hot-dip galvanized steel coil and sheet imports from Russia and Turkey for five years.

Turkey’s January-September exports fell 5% on the year to 1.25 million mt, hit by lower exports in August and September, as the EU is traditionally a main HDG export destination.

Exports to Spain fell 67% on the year to 140,000 mt over January-September, while shipments to Romania were relatively stable at 97,000 mt.

Exports to Greece dropped 8% to 79,000 mt, while shipments to Italy declined 46% to 67,500 mt.

Exports to Portugal decreased by 66% to 44,300 mt, while exports to Belgium dropped 75% to 41,500 mt.

However, shipments to the US rose 36% on the year at 123,000 mt, while other export destinations in the period were Canada at 52,500 mt and Egypt at 44,000 mt.

The total revenue generated from the January-September exports dropped 17% on the year to $1.56 billion, the data showed.

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, assessed the weekly Turkish domestic HDG price at $830/mt ex-works Nov. 11, down from the 2022 high of $1,400/mt reached in mid-March.
