Arvedi to increase production at Acciai Speciali Terni
Italian stainless steelmaker Acciai Speciali Terni (AST), now part of Arvedi, is to reveal on Friday its industrial plan, Kallanish learns from sources close to the company. An agreement signed this week with trade unions shows that Arvedi intends to hire more workers for AST’s entire hot-end area to increase production to 21 shifts per week.
Unions point out that all existing workers have had their positions confirmed and obtained advantageous conditions for salary and overtime pay at weekends.
Contacted by Kallanish, Arvedi declined to comment further but did confirm the agreement.
Last year, thyssenkrupp completed the sale of the AST stainless steel mill to Arvedi. The two firms agreed that thyssenkrupp will retain a 15% stake in AST to strengthen the already existing cooperation between the companies. The sale of AST will improve the German firm’s net financial position by more than €600 million ($665m).
AST employs around 2,700 people and generated sales of around €2 billion in the 2020-2021 fiscal year. AST combined with Arvedi will become a large stainless and carbon steelmaking processing business with 6,200 employees. Giovanni Arvedi and Mario Caldonazzo are now respectively president and chief executive of Acciai Speciali Terni.

ArcelorMittal Spain resumes limited longs production
ArcelorMittal Spain is resuming activities at its Gijón steelworks on Friday, Kallanish learns from the company. The steelmaker is restarting long steel production, although limited to 55,000 tonnes/month, compared to the normal capacity of 75,000 t/m. This is due to still costly energy in Spain and reduced supplies of raw materials.
The Gijón steelworks’ production will initially be carried out through a single converter and production increases will be based on demand developments.
It is understood that ArcelorMittal’s wire rod plant should produce almost 37,000 t/m from 3 April, while the rail mill division will resume output on the following day with 18,000 t/m capacity.
The steel company plans to carry out its annual maintenance work at the Asturias unit between 3 and 30 August.

Tata Steel makes structural section for Siemens Gamesa’s UK wind turbine factory
Tata Steel has supplied more than 1,500 mt of high-strength steel to help build a major extension to Siemens Gamesa’s offshore wind turbine blade factory at Hull in northeast England, the largest UK steel producer said March 31.
Tata Steel used its so called “Celsius” structural hollow section products as they are able to provide the strength needed for the large unsupported spans. These kinds of steel are used usually in places such as sports stadiums, bridges and iconic buildings as it allows designers to create wide open areas which do not require pillars.
Wind turbine blades manufactured and processed in the new expanded building will be used to develop wind farms in the North Sea to power UK homes and factories. As well as supporting the renewable energy sector with steel, Tata Steel in the UK has targeted to produce net-zero steel by 2050 and to reduce its CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030.
