UK-based steel producer 7 Steel UK has signed a memorandum of understanding with Heathrow Airport to support the use of domestically produced steel. The airport’s planned expansion project could require up to 400,000 tons of steel.
7 Steel UK stated that it has been working with Heathrow for more than 20 years and has supplied over 150,000 tons of steel to the airport to date, including for the construction of Terminal 5. The signed memorandum of understanding marks a new phase in the cooperation between the two parties.
7 Steel UK CEO Carles Rovira described the agreement as a milestone for UK steel production and a strong indication of confidence in the industry’s future.
Rovira stated that Heathrow’s commitment to using UK-produced steel demonstrates the potential of major infrastructure projects to support domestic manufacturing, safeguard skilled jobs and strengthen supply chains across the country.
The company produces low-carbon steel from recycled scrap using an electric arc furnace at its Cardiff facility. The cooperation with Heathrow aims to strengthen the role of domestically produced steel in major infrastructure projects.
