European HRC prices edge higher despite sluggish demand

Steel hot-rolled coil prices in Northern Europe and Italy edged higher on Wednesday September 30, although trading activity remained subdued in both markets amid cautious buying, sources told Fastmarkets.

In Northern Europe, a buyer indicated mill offers at €760 ($862) per tonne ex-works.

“The market is very quiet. Small bookings are being done at €740 per tonne ex-works,” the source added.

No other fresh price points were reported during the pricing session. Thus, in line with Fastmarkets’ methodology, seller data from Tuesday indicating workable levels at €740-750 per tonne ex-works was carried over into Wednesday’s calculation. On Tuesday, a buyer had indicated workable levels at €745-760 per tonne ex-works and a second buyer had reported tradable levels at €735-750 per tonne ex-works.

Consequently, Fastmarkets’ daily steel hot-rolled coil index domestic, exw Northern Europe was calculated at €746.88 per tonne on Wednesday September 30, up by €0.63 per tonne from €746.25 per tonne on Tuesday September 29.

The index was up by €6.88 per tonne week on week and by €5.63 per tonne month on month.

In Italy, trading activity remained constrained by cautious downstream buying.

A buyer source reported an indication within €740-745 per tonne ex-works.

“We hear workable levels have come closer to the Northern European level,” the source added.

A second buyer source indicated achievable levels slightly higher, at €740-750 per tonne ex-works.

As a result, Fastmarkets’ daily steel hot-rolled coil index domestic, exw Italy was calculated at €743.75 per tonne on Wednesday September 30, up by €1.25 per tonne from €742.50 per tonne on Tuesday September 29.

The index was up by €8.75 per tonne week on week and by €26.25 per tonne month on month.
