Italian passenger car production declined again in August and in the first eight months of the year, Kallanish notes from automotive association Associazione Nazionale Filiera Industria Automobilistica (Anfia) preliminary data.
Car output stood at only 4,500 units in August, down by 27.4% year-on-year. The volumes were lower by 31.6% in the first eight months of 2025, to 157,900 units.
In comparison, the UK recorded a y-o-y decline in August of 10.2% to 31,700 cars and a more moderate 5.9% decline to 492,000 units in January-August. Spain saw an increase by 14.3% to 63,400 cars in August and a decrease of 7.4% in January-August to 1.2 million units.
German production fell in August by 21% to 237,600 cars but still had a cumulative 2% uptick year-to-date to 2.8m units, Anfia says.
The most recent data indicate that French car production in January-June experienced a y-o-y increase of 15% to 543,500 cars.
“The automotive sector is operating within a broader context of declining Italian industrial production in August 2025 compared with the same month last year. The overall industrial production index recorded a 2.7% decrease in August, bringing the cumulative result for the first eight months of the year to -1% compared with the corresponding period in 2024,” Anfia says in a note.
Anfia emphasises the need for regulatory measures in line with market realities. The association urges that the “strategic dialogue on automotive” in Europe address the revision of CO2 emissions rules for light vehicles, advocating a return to technological neutrality, a review of the 2030 and 2035 targets, which are currently considered unattainable.
Italian car output in 2024 declined 42.8% versus 2023 to 309,758 units. The total number of vehicles produced in the country last year, including heavy duty vehicles, amounted to 519,000 units, reflecting a 32.3% decline versus 2023.
