Polish domestic long steel prices still flat, demand low

Polish steel rebar and wire rod prices remained flat in the week to Friday October 10, with muted demand affecting the market, sources have told Fastmarkets.
“Demand is rather weak, I would say a bit weaker than in September,” a distributor source said.

In the week to Friday, estimates of workable levels for wire rod were heard at around 2,580-2,650 zloty ($701-720) per tonne CPT, the same as in the previous assessment period.

At the same time, some offers were also heard hovering around 2,600-2,650 zloty per tonne CPT.

Therefore, Fastmarkets’ price assessment for steel wire rod (drawing quality), domestic, delivered Poland, was 2,580-2,650 zloty per tonne on Friday, unchanged week on week.

Some offers for imported wire rod from Ukraine were heard hovering around €530-555 ($613-642) per tonne CPT last week.

Regarding rebar, prices were also stable in the week to Friday.

Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel reinforcing bar (rebar), domestic, cpt Poland, was 2,420-2,450 zloty per tonne on Friday, also unchanged week on week.

On October 7, the European Commission unveiled its new proposal to reform its steel import safeguards, suggesting cuts in tariff-free quotas by about 47% and imposing a steep 50% ad valorem duty on any volumes beyond the new threshold, Fastmarkets heard.

If approved by the European Parliament and Council, the new rules are expected to become official in mid-2026.

When asked about the potential short-term effects of the proposal on the Polish long steel market, a source said there is “not much panic” in the market now, because it will take some time for the measure to come into force.
