Primetals Technologies modernized Çolakoğlu Metalurji’s electric arc furnace

Çolakoğlu Metalurji, one of Türkiye’s leading steel producers, has completed its electric arc furnace (EAF) revamping project in collaboration with Primetals Technologies.
The renewed furnace provides significant improvements in production efficiency and energy consumption, while also setting new industry standards in ease of maintenance and operational reliability.
As part of the revamp, an innovative furnace tilting device that increases the precision and speed of furnace movement was used. With the electromagnetic stirring (EMS) system supplied by ABB, the modernization places Çolakoğlu at the forefront of electric steel production.
Complex engineering challenges were successfully overcome
The project required integrating new mechanical and hydraulic components into the existing EAF. The tilting mechanism, frame structures, and the EMS system were precisely aligned with the furnace body and the plant infrastructure. Dismantling, structural adaptation, re‑installation, and commissioning were completed within a tight four‑week schedule. This process required flawless coordination and seamless cooperation between the design, manufacturing, and field teams.
Working within the limited furnace bay, managing sensitive interfaces, and ensuring smart logistics increased the complexity of the project. All mechanical and hydraulic tasks were completed on time while maintaining safety, quality, and long‑term reliability standards.
Fast installation with a modular approach
Primetals Technologies and Çolakoğlu Metalurji pre‑assembled all new components using detailed 3D models and dedicated drawings. Modular pre‑assembly significantly reduced on‑site installation time while minimizing interface adjustments.
As a result, the project was completed on schedule, delivering a modernization that sets an example for existing plant upgrades in the steel industry. The new EAF system offers improved efficiency, easy maintenance, mechanical stability, and long‑term reliability.
