Southern Europe rebar, wire rod prices fall on lower scrap costs, weak demand

Rebar and wire rod prices in Southern Europe were mostly lower in the week to Wednesday May 14, mainly due to a lack of buying interest and falling scrap values, sources told Fastmarkets.

In northern Italy, rebar was on offer at €550-570 ($607-635) per tonne ex-works, sources said, while offers came in at €570-600 per tonne ex-works in the south of the country.

Last week, the lowest offer prices were around €580 per tonne ex-works.

Fastmarkets’ price assessment for steel reinforcing bar (rebar) domestic, exw Italy was €550-600 per tonne on May14, down from €580-620 per tonne on May 7.

Italian suppliers were offering wire rod at €580-600 per tonne ex-works, which equates to about €590-615 per tonne delivered.

In Spain, meanwhile, sellers were targeting €620 per tonne delivered for wire rod, but sources said that level was unacceptable for customers and expect the price to fall to €610 per tonne delivered.

Fastmarkets weekly price assessment for steel wire rod (mesh quality) domestic, delivered Southern Europe, was €590-610 per tonne on May 14, down by €10-20 per tonne from €610-620 per tonne on May 7.

Rebar was traded in Spain at around €615 per tonne delivered in the week to Wednesday, sources told Fastmarkets.

And Fastmarkets weekly price assessment for steel reinforcing bar (Rebar) domestic, delivered Spain, remained unchanged at €610-620 per tonne in the week to May 14.
