Tosyali Algerie, which produced more than 2.23 million mt of direct reduced iron (DRI) in 2020, a world record for a single direct reduction module, has continued investments to reach its 8.5 million mt/year capacity target in Algeria, according to Fuat Tosyali, CEO of Turkey’s Tosyali Holding.
Algeria was a net importer of rebar and wire rod when Tosyali started production in 2013 with initial capacity of 1.2 million mt/year of rebar. A 600,000 mt/year wire rod facility was added in 2015 and in 2018, Tosyali added 2.2 million mt/year of liquid steel for the production of billets, two rolling mills, and a 4 million mt/year pelletizing plant.
The company’s rebar production capacity is currently at 3.2 million mt/year. Tosyali also started production in early 2019 at its 400,000 mt/year helical submerged arc welding pipe mill, Tosyali Algeria Pipe.
The company also began the construction of a hot-rolled coil mill in Algeria with a capacity of 2 million mt/year, which is scheduled to start production at the end of 2022.
“Our value-added steel investments at our Algeria mill are continuing. We have already started the fourth phase of our investment plan. When all phases of our investments are completed, we will become a large industrial plant with a capacity of 8.5 million mt,” the CEO said. “We became prominent in the global competition with the technology that we are using. With the DRI technology, we are producing one of the world’s most green and environmentalist steels.”
Tosyali Holding is also continuing its value-added steel investments in Turkey. The company’s new 3.5 million mt flat steel mill is scheduled to start production at the end of 2022, Platts learned.
