Plate stockist Zimmer Staal bought back from Stemcor: owner

Belgian heavy plate stockholder Zimmmer Staal has been purchased from trading house Stemcor to become fully independent again, the stockist’s founder and owner Luc Cools told S&P Global Platts in an interview.

“In 2013 problems started for Stemcor in India, which lead to the exit of the and Oppenheimer family and put Stemcor into financial problems,” he said.

After a previous sales offer had been withdrawn when the financial crisis hit, Stemcor acquired Zimmer Staal in 2011. “It was the financial injection I really needed to grow to a level in the market where I believe that Zimmer Staal will reach that level,” Cools said.

“The only reason to bring a third party in was for a financial injection, so four years after the financial problems started I asked them to sell me the company back as I see no future nor growth possibilities in this structure,” he said. Zimmer Staal became fully independent again on September 11.

The stockholding business has annual sales volumes of 115,000 mt of heavy plate and 45,000 mt on the floor, but Cools said he plans to increase sales over the next years as “current demand is very good.” “We are growing every year at least 10%. I am targeting 150,000 mt of heavy plate sales a year in the next four to five years, adding 10,000mt every year,” he said.

Zimmer Staal sources around 80% of the material from imports and 20% from EU mills. The main grades in stock are S235 and S355, while the majority of customers are based in Holland, Belgium and Germany. A smaller amount is also shipped to Scandinavia.

EU distributors’ January-July shipments fall year-on-year

The latest data from EUROMETAL, the steel distributors’ and traders’ association, indicates that steel shipments from distributors across Europe remained below 2016 levels during the first seven months of the year. This happened despite the overall recovery in market prices and sentiment, the association says.

According to EUROMETAL, flat steel service centres (SSC) shipments during the January-July period were -0.4% lower than the same period last year. In July alone however shipments increased 4.8% year-on-year and the continued rebound in both demand and prices is expected to further support market recovery in the coming months, Kallanish notes.

Meanwhile during the first seven months of the year multi-product stockholders and distributors shipped -1.6% less volume than in the same period in 2016. In July itself shipments increased nevertheless by some 6.7% y-o-y, EUROMETAL confirms.

In terms of stock levels, flat SSC stocks stood at 69 days of sales on average across Europe in July, up 2 days from July 2016. Multi-product distributors’ stocks were calculated at 77 days of sales, down 5 days y-o-y.

thyssenkrupp eröffnet TechCenter Additive Manufacturing

In the newly opened TechCenter Additive Manufacturing in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Thyssenkrupp is industrializing the 3D printing of metals and plastics. The entire planning and manufacturing process is digital. Through its existing experience and research partnerships, the company wants to use the potential of 3D printing close to the customer. The key markets of machine and plant construction, aviation, navy and automotive are to benefit from this technology. “Additive Manufacturing is a further step in the digital transformation of our Group and a building block in our innovation strategy,” said Dr. Heinrich Hiesinger, Chairman of the Board of Thyssenkrupp AG, at the opening of the Center.

A small, agile team works with a printer for metals and plastics in a production hall on the premises of the steering manufacturer of thyssenkrupp. Both devices process powdered base materials according to the Selective Laser melting or sintering process and build layered components. As a blueprint only one CAD file is necessary, the product can then be finished directly from the digital data, without media breaks. The conventional process step of tool or mold construction is omitted. “For the first time, it is possible that we focus entirely on the design as such without having to take into account the limits of conventional production processes – this creates a completely new potential for innovation”, explains Dr. Reinhold Achatz, technology manager of thyssenkrupp AG.

Additive Manufacturing as a Community Task

In the new TechCenter, products and technologies are further developed, competencies are even more closely linked and the focus is consciously placed on projects with industrialization potential. In the next three years, the Group’s central development department will be responsible for the TechCenter, before going on under the umbrella of the Materials Services business area. “We know exactly which materials are optimal for which product and have the experience in logistics and project management in order to quickly advance the TechCenter. Through our broad customer base, we also have a clear vision of who benefits 3D printing technology, “said Hans-Josef Hoß, a member of thyssenkrupp Materials Services, at the inauguration of the center.

German stockists’ sales see double-digit growth in May

Sales at German steel stockholders increased by 13.5% year-on-year to 1 million mt in May, while stocks remained stable at 2.4 million mt, according to latest figures from the stockholders’ association Bundesverband Deutscher Stahlhandel (BDS).

The data showed that buying activity picked up again in May following rather subdued business in April when sales were at 858,012 mt. Looking at data going back to 2014, May sales levels have been the second highest in that time period, but very close to this year’s March sales levels at 1.06 million.

In detailed figures for May, flat product sales showed a 14.9% y-o-y increase to 583,422 mt, whereas long products saw similar growth of 13.9% y-o-y to 323,312 mt.

In regards to stock levels however, long and flat products showed different developments in May. While flat product inventories rose slightly by 2.6% y-o-y to 1.5 million mt, long products fell by 13.5% y-o-y to 839,909 mt.

Sources in Germany highlighted to Platts previously that stocks of flat products in particular remained high throughout spring and only started to marginally reduce at the beginning of the summer.

Anpassung an neue Kundenbedürfnisse
